SF WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

SAINTS HOLD ON TO BEAT FSC-J, 62-57

Jacksonville, FL – The Santa Fe Saints (10-10, 2-1 MFC) led 9-0 early on, but the Stars of Florida State College-Jacksonville didn't give in, rallying to lead 32-25 at the break. SF fought back in the second half, outscoring the Stars 37 to 25 for the win.The victory is the tenth in a row for Santa FE over FSC-J, dating back to 2008.

The Saints kept FSC-J in the game late by missing four straight free throws, but timely defense and solid rebounding helped SF overcome the cold streak from the charity stripe.

Leandra King dominated the game in the paint in the second half to lead Santa Fe back, finishing with 11 points (7-for-10 FT), 13 rebounds and three blocked shots, giving her 43 on the season. She currently leads the state and is only two blocks away from 100 for her career.

"Leandra did a great job tonight," said SF coach Chanda Stebbins. "She really controlled the paint for us and gave us some good second chance opportunities."

Stephenie Coney led the scoring effort for Santa Fe with 14 and Kindsay Brandt had 10 points and four rebounds.

The difference in the game came on the glass where the Saints outrebounded FSC-J by 12.

"I was proud of our composure in the second half," said Stebbins. "I would, however, like to see us make some free throws at the end of a game like that so we don't put ourselves in that type of a position."

The Saints return home to face Hillsborough CC on Wednesday, January 19 to take on the Hawks in a MFC matchup. The game can be watched live on www.psblive.com.
