SAINTS FALL TO CHIPOLA 65-52 IN CABOT LODGE HOLIDAY CLASSIC
Gainesville, FL – Chipola College (14-3) led from start to finish on Wednesday night, handing Santa Fe their first loss in over a month. SF (8-8) last lost on November 27 to Northwest Shoals.
Stephanie Edwards did what she could for the Saints, scoring 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting and Stephenie Coney pitched in 10 points in the losing effort. Leandra King led the team with six rebounds.
"Leandra played very hard for us tonight," said SF coach Chanda Stebbins. "We need to get the same heart and hustle out of all of our players every game if we want to compete with the best teams in the state."
Neither team shot the ball well, with both teams below 40% for the game. The difference in the contest came on the glass, where the Indians outrebounded the Saints 46-32 overall and 18-10 on the offensive end.
"We played defense in spurts tonight and gave up way to many offensive rebounds," said Stebbins. "It's tough to win games like that."
Chipola led by 12 at the half, but SF managed to slice into the lead, cutting the margin to six with 14 minutes to go in the game.
The Indian's Jasmine Shaw answered with back to back three point shots to push the lead back to double digits, a margin that would stay that way the rest of the game, concluding with a 65-52 win for Chipola. CC made 10 three pointers on the game, six more than Santa Fe.
The Saints continue in the Cabot Lodge Holiday Classic on Thursday when they host the defending National Champions, Gulf Coast CC, at 4:00pm. The Santa Fe men follow against USC-Salkahatchie at 6:00pm.
