LATE MISCUES DOOM SAINTS IN LOSS TO PALM BEACH, 71-67
Gainesville, FL – The Santa Fe Saints (9-4) nearly pulled off a big upset on Saturday night, but came up just short against undefeated and FCCAA #1 Palm Beach State College, 71-67.
The Saints trailed by as many as 18 points just eight minutes into the game, but slowly chipped away and eventually took their first lead with 2:16 left in regulation. A costly lane violation during a SF made free throw, and another turnover after a missed free throw by PBSC with under a minute proved too costly for SF to overcome.
“This was a really good game. Palm Beach is extremely talented and we just got ourselves into too much of a hole early on,” said SF Coach Chris Mowry. “It seemed like every three they took went in. I'm proud of our guys for continuing to battle and not giving in.”
PBSC made six three pointers in the first eight minutes of the game and eight total in the first half to stake themselves to a 41-33 first period lead.
The Saints slowly closed the gap in the second half before taking their first lead with just over two minutes to go, 64-63, on a Chad Renfro three pointer. After a PBSC layup, Jerome Clyburn gave SF the lead back and the Panthers again answered making two free throws and then a layup to move out in front, 69-66. Fifteen seconds later Clyburn made the first of two free throws, but the second free throw was ruled no good after a lane violation.
SF would not score the rest of the way and two Palm Beach free throws with two seconds iced the game.
Chad Renfro paced the offense with 17 points, Marko Djekovic had 13 and Jerome Clyburn 11.
The Saints continue in the Florida College Shootout on Sunday, December 12 when they take on Pensacola State College at 3:00pm.
