SAINTS WRAP UP SUCCESSFUL FALL BALL
Gainesville, FL – Coach Chris Ahern wanted to challenge her squad during the “Fall Ball” season, so she threw out conventional wisdom of playing mostly travel ball teams and instead mixed in five premier NCAA Division I, NAIA and NJCAA squads. These included 2010 Women’s College World Series participant the University of Florida, Florida State University, the University of North Florida, Thomas University and Gulf Coast CC. The challenging schedule gave the returning and new players a sense of what the regular season will hold and a chance to hone their skills against top notch talent.
Santa Fe played 26 games over 10 different dates with five players ending the fall with a .400 batting average or better and nine hit above .300. Sophomore third baseman Gia Tomossone led the way offensively, hitting six homeruns with a .500 batting average and freshman Lindsey Hamlin belted two grand slams. Six other players hit at least one homerun. As a team, Santa Fe tallied 50 extra base hits.
For the third year in a row, SF battled cross town rival the Florida Gators and played them tough, getting six hits and a run off of 2010 All-American pitcher Stephanie Brombacher and two runs off of freshman star Hannah Rodgers.
“Our sophomore pitchers [Colena Lazar and Jasmine Warren] picked up where they left off last fall, and our freshmen did an amazing job,” said SF coach Chris Ahern. “As a team we hit .390, including all that tough competition in the NCAA Division I schools, in fact six hits off Stephanie Brombacher is quite an accomplishment. Although we have ways to go, we did some very good things on the field, and we look forward to trying to get better for the regular season.”
The spring regular season starts on January 29, 2011 with the JUCO Kickoff Classic Tournament in Clearwater. The first home game is Friday, February 4 when St. Petersburg College comes to Gainesville for a doubleheader starting at 2:00pm.
