SAINTS FINISH FALL SEASON UNDEFEATED
Gainesville, FL – The Santa Fe Saints baseball team completed an undefeated “Fall Ball” season recently, finishing with an impressive 19-0-3 record.
SF hit .267 as a team with 166 RBI, five HR, 43 doubles, 19 triples and 32 stolen bases. Saints pitchers struck out 273 batters in 250.2 innings.
Infielder Nathan Bandy led the team in hitting with a .412 batting average. LHP Ben O’Shea led the pitchers in ERA at 0.40 and strikeouts with 33 in 22.2 innings. He surrendered only one earned run the entire fall. The pitching staff as a whole gave up only 39 earned runs, posting an ERA of 1.40.
Other statistical leaders include: 1B Garrett Greenwell – 16 RBI, 3B Jake Huxtable – six doubles, C Tim Remes – four triples, SS TJ Spina – 22 runs, OF Kyle Buchanan – five stolen bases. Five players tied with one home run a piece.
Fall Ball concluded with the Blue-Grey World Series, an annual inter squad scrimmage pitting teammate against teammate. The highly competitive series was won by Assistant Coach Bruce Larkins’ team, narrowly defeating Assistant Coach Brett Merritt’s squad 2-1 in the three game series.
“I feel like we answered a lot of questions this fall. I was really pleased with the effort the players gave in the two plus months of our fall season. Our Blue/Grey World Series was extremely competitive and came down to the wire,” said Coach Johnny Wiggs. “I thought our pitchers had a great fall but will be facing better competition on a regular basis come spring. We will turn up the intensity of our weights and conditioning program as we head to the end of the year. I am really excited about this team and it’s potential. I am looking forward to the spring season.”
The spring baseball regular season starts on January 28, 2011 when the Saints travel to Tampa to take on Hillsborough CC. The first home game for SF is on January 29 when South Georgia College comes to Gainesville for a doubleheader starting at 12:00pm.
