SAINTS RALLY FALLS SHORT AGAINST TCC

Gainesville, FL – The FCCAA #9 Santa Fe Saints (2-4) mounted a furious comeback in the second half of Tuesday night’s game against #3 Tallahassee CC after falling behind by 19 in the first, but came up short, falling 68-55.

“I was happy to see our girls fight back and not give in,” SF coach Chanda Stebbins said. “Unfortunately we put ourselves in a big hole early on. We also have to giveTallahassee credit, they made some big shots when they needed them.”

Santa Fe came out cold shooting the ball, making only 17% of their shots in the first half, leading to a 30-11 deficit at the break.

Jasmine Richardson (pictured) led the charge for SF in the second period, scoring 12 straight points over a three minute period early in the second to cut the TCC lead to 36-33. The Eagles quickly answered, going on an 8-0 run to push the margin back to 11.

“I’m not surprised at all by how well Jasmine played tonight,” said Stebbins. “She practices hard every day and raised her level even further the last two days of practice. We have some players that need to figure out how important practicing at game speed is.”

The Saints made a final push with just under four minutes to go, cutting the 11 point lead down to five on free throws by Demisha Mills and Leandra King and a three point shot by Kindsay Brandt, making the score 55-50.

Tallahassee countered and built the lead back to 10. The Eagles made eight free throws in the last minute to secure their second victory over the Saints in four days. TCC defeated SF in Marianna on Saturday 59-47.

For the game, Santa Fe shot 38.5% (20-for-68) and TCC shot 47.6% (20-for-42). The difference came at the free throw line where the Eagles outscored SF 22-10. Santa Fe was 10-for-23 from the foul line.

“Our free throw shooting has been inexcusable,” said Stebbins. “We absolutely have to get better if we want to play with teams like Tallahassee. You cannot leave that many points on the floor and expect to win.”

Jasmine Richardson led the Saints in scoring with 15, all coming in the second half. Leandra King had 12 points and seven rebounds, Kindsay Brandt scored 10 and Kristien Malone had eight points and six rebounds.

“Kristien did a nice job for us in the first half with eight of our 11 points,” said Stebbins. “As a team however, we need to start getting more production early on in games. Hopefully we will learn from this and continue to improve each day.”

Next up for Santa Fe is the College of Central Florida Tournament in Ocala on November 19-21. Brevard College is up first on Friday at 4:00pm, Miami Dade College at 4:00pm on Saturday and the Saints finish the tournament with Broward College on Sunday at 2:00pm.
