New Class Helps Prevent Burnout of Health Care Providers

August 18, 2010

Professor Greg A. Jones has announced a new class aimed primarily at nursing students.

“Basically, anyone in our Health Sciences or Tech programs could participate,” he said.

It is listed as HSC 1920 Group Health: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and Management for Health Care Professionals and is a 1-credit class that meets once a week in Fall A and Fall B.

Course description

“This course is designed to familiarize students heading into health care professions with the phenomenon of perceived psychological stress, its physiological and psychological causes. Over 250 medical centers nationwide are incorporating this program for their medical staff to help them deal with the potential stress (and possible burnout) many health professionals experience. The course will describe a number of mindfulness meditative strategies for dealing with and avoiding experiencing chronic stress in their daily lives and in the work place.” (Read more)

Benefits

“If the caregiver is burned out, what message, impression, or environment does this bring to the ones you're providing care to?” Jones said.

  • Mindfulness Meditation can give you a sense of calm, peace and balance that benefits both your emotional wellbeing and your overall health.
  • Meditation can help carry you more calmly through your day and improve your academic and professional potential.
