Students Take Control in 2010 Room to Dance
June 4, 2010
What happens when you leave the students in charge? To find out, come see “Room to Dance,” Santa Fe College’s annual student-choreographed summer dance show. Seven different works are scheduled for this year’s performances at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, June 4 and June 5, in the E Building Auditorium at the Northwest campus, 3000 NW 83rd St.
“The show is an extra-curricular project that gives young choreographers and dancers the opportunity to create their own work,” said Rodney A. Brown, assistant professor and artistic director of dance at Santa Fe, and director for this year’s presentation.
The pieces are conceived, arranged and performed by the students without any structure from faculty. Subjects range from comedy to serious social commentary.
“Sunburns in Funny Places,” is a comedy choreographed by Elizabeth Snow and Danielle Rivet. Team creation is unusual in the world of dance; choreographers traditionally work solo when creating dances, Brown said. The piece combines hip hop and spoken word, with six dancers and strong use of gestures. The work is infused with a wry sense of humor, Brown said.
Other pieces include solo dances, small ensembles, or in one case, a single dancer who interacts with a projected figure. The show runs approximately 90 minutes.
Performances are free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted to help fund next year's event.
