Katey Arnold Named Chair of the Mathematics Department
June 1, 2010
Katey Arnold will be the next Chair of the Mathematics Department and will assume full responsibility July 1.
“Katey's outstanding leadership on the Intermediate Algebra Redesign Team and on the College Senate gives me every confidence that she will continue to excel in her new position,” said Steve Grosteffon, the current Chair. “I believe she has gained our respect and that our department will benefit from her appointment.”
Katey and Steve will be working together this summer to make the transition as seamless as possible.
“I hope that you will join me in congratulating Katey and that you will give her your full support,” he added.
Steve has served as chair of the Mathematics department since 2008, and his calm and careful leadership have helped to guide the department through a significant course redesign process related to our Title III program. At the same time, he has continued to serve as project director of the Math Opens Doors scholarship program, a grant-funded program from the National Science Foundation that helps students — especially women and minorities — explore the possibility of careers in mathematics and math-related fields.
“Steve has done an excellent job leading the college's largest department,” said Interim Provost Ed Bonahue. “His ability to help students and faculty alike has been truly remarkable.”
