LAZAR NAMED STATE PITCHER OF THE YEAR
Gainesville, FL – Freshman pitcher Colena Lazar was recently honored by the Florida Community College Activities Association as the fastpitch softball “Pitcher of the Year” for her efforts on the field during the 2010 season. The award goes along with her Mid-Florida Conference “Pitcher of the Year” and First Team MFC honors.
Lazar led the state during the regular season in wins (26), strikeouts (269) and no hitters (4). She finished her freshman year, including the state tournament, with a 26-4 record, 279 strikeouts, a 1.26 ERA and a .145 batting average against.
Her 279 strikeouts set a new school record for a single season, breaking Rachael Foster's 2005 mark and the four no hitters are a single season and career record. On April 3, she broke the single game strikeout record when she fanned 18 Daytona State batters in a ten inning Saints win, breaking her own record of 16.
During the week of March 17 she was named the NJCAA “National Pitcher of the Week”.
“Colena had an exceptional year as a freshman and we are looking forward to good things from her again next year”, said Coach Chris Ahern. “She did an outstanding job through the season, breaking and setting new records, and always has a strong desire to win, and help her team. We are excited to see her grow even more as a sophomore.”
