MOYER COMMITS TO THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA, MERIANS TO FLORIDA STATE

Gainesville, FL – Santa Fe sophomore baseball players Jeff Moyer and Gary Merians have committed to national powerhouses the University of Florida and Florida State University respectively, according to Santa Fe Head Coach Johnny Wiggs.

“I am really excited for Gary and Jeff to have the opportunity to move on to two great baseball programs here in the state,” said Santa Fe coach Johnny Wiggs.  “These guys have been great for us here at Santa Fe and they will do great for the Gators and the Seminoles.  We all look forward to following them the next two years.”

Third baseman Jeff Moyer announced his commitment this week to the University of Florida and coach Kevin O’Sullivan.  The Saints leading hitter will join an already outstanding lineup next season when he suits up for the Gators.  UF is currently ranked #6 in the nation according to Baseball America and hold a 28-11 overall record and are 12-6 in the Southeastern Conference, good for second in the Eastern Division.  The Gators are batting .297 as a team with 50 homeruns through 39 games.

Moyer is leading Santa Fe in batting average at .404 (61-for-151), is tied for the team lead in homeruns with 12 and has driven in 45 runs in 40 games played.  He is slugging .762 and has a .505 on base percentage, both good enough for highest on the team.

Two year starting pitcher Gary Merians has given his commitment to Florida State University and Head Coach Mike Martin.  The Seminoles are ranked #4 in the nation according to Baseball America and currently have a 31-10 overall record.  FSU competes in the Atlantic Coast Conference and leads the Atlantic Division with a 14-7 record.

Merians has been the ace of the Saints pitching staff for two seasons and finished the 2010 regular season with a 2.79 ERA, a 5-3 record and has struck out 71 batters in 86 innings pitched.  During the State Tournament and JUCO World Series last season, Merians combined to go 4-0 in helping to lead the Saints to a National Runner-up finish in Colorado.
