SAINTS OUTLAST ST. JOHN'S RIVER, 11-10
Gainesville, FL – The Santa Fe Saints did most of their damage early on, scoring nine of their eleven runs in the first three innings and were able to withstand a late run by St. John's River CC to go up by three games in the MFC standings with five to play. BOX SCORE
The Saints (22-13, 13-6 MFC) pounded out 19 hits with four players having three or more hits and six with two or more.
Mike Miranda put SF on the board in the first inning with a sacrifice fly but SJRCC answered and took a 2-1 in the second on a fielder's choice and a throwing error.
The Saints came right back and put four runs up on six hits in the bottom half of the second, giving them a 5-1 lead. Ricky Claudio, TJ Spina, Mike Miranda and Corey Elasik all had RBI in the inning.
In the third inning, Elasik doubled home two runs and Austin Lawrence and TJ Spina had two out RBI hits to increase the SF lead to 9-3.
St. John's chipped away, scoring two in the fourth and one in the fifth. The Saints managed to get two runs back on a Vikings error in the fifth. Jeff Moyer singled past the first baseman and the right fielder let the ball go under his glove all the way to the fence, scoring the base runner Spina, and Moyer.
The Vikings scored two in the sixth to cut the margin to 11-8 and made things interesting in the ninth with two more runs. Daryl Barnes nailed things down, getting the final SJRCC batter to fly out to shallow left field to end the game. The save is Barnes fifth of the season.
Ken Wise started on the mound for SF and pitched four innings, surrendering five runs, two of them earned. Corey Turner (2-0) threw 1.1 innings of relief and earned the win, Ory Pitts pitched 2.2 innings of one hit ball and Barnes closed out the game with one inning of relief.
TJ Spina finished the game 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI, Jeff Moyer was 3-for-5, Austin Lawrence 3-for-6 with an RBI and two runs scored, Ricky Claudio 3-for-4 with an RBI, Corey Elasik was 2-for-4 and drove in three runs and Mike Miranda finished 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI.
The Saints next home game is on the road at Florida State College-Jacksonville on Wednesday at 3:00pm.
