RAGANS, BARNES PITCH SAINTS TO WIN OVER DSC, 5-3
Daytona, FL – The Santa Fe Saints (20-13, 11-6 MFC) won an important game in their quest for a second straight Mid-Florida Conference title on Friday afternoon, defeating Daytona State College 5-3, a game they led the entire way. The win moves SF two games ahead of Central Florida CC (9-8) and Daytona (9-8) in the MFC standings.
Steven Ragans (3-0) provided the strong pitching performance Coach Johnny Wiggs looks for from his starts, going 6.1 innings, surrendering three runs with five strikeouts.
“Steven was solid for us again on the mound,” said Wiggs. “He did a great job keeping them off balance and our defense was errorless behind him today, which was nice to see.”
The Saints opened the scoring with two runs in the third inning on a two run homerun by TJ Spina.
Ricky Claudio singled home Santa Fe's third run in the fourth inning, knocking in Mike Miranda.
In the fifth inning, TJ Spina singled to lead off and two batters later Jeff Moyer advanced him to second with a groundout. The Falcons intentionally walked Miranda and decided to pitch to Brett Bozeman with two outs and runners on first and second. Bozeman made them pay for the decision when he laced a double into the gap, scoring two to put SF up 5-1.
Daytona made things close in the seventh with two runs, but Daryl Barnes shut down the Falcons the rest of the way to save his fourth game of the year for Santa Fe.
TJ Spina led the offense, going 2-for-4 with a two run homer and two runs scored and Mike Miranda was 2-for-3 with two runs and two intentional walks.
The Saints have another big conference game Saturday when they travel to Ocala to take on Central Florida CC at 1:00pm.
