SF Spring Arts Festival Poster by Angela Hoppe Unveils March 29

March 26, 2010

Angela Hoppe loves color. Vibrant blues, glowing yellows, intense greens and more pop from her engaging oil paintings. A visit to her studio in the SF Spring Arts House is as refreshing as a glass of iced tea on a warm afternoon.

Part of the charm is the variety in size of her paintings. Some are a comfortable small size that could occupy a display easel on a desk or counter top; others range up to a size that demands wall space. But the common denominator is wonderful, enchanting color.

In her student days Hoppe took art courses at the University of Texas and at Pratt Institute (N.Y.). Then she bowed to family pressure, got degrees in a mainstream profession, and didn't paint again until her younger child was born.

She worked in watercolor for 15 years and appeared in shows in Miami. At that time Hoppe concentrated on portraits and painted such prominent figures as then-Governor Jeb Bush, local officials, and celebrities.

“I switched to oil paint about eight years ago because it has more luminosity,” said Hoppe.

She moved to Gainesville soon after that and began landscape painting.

“There's such a diverse landscape here so I've really enjoyed that. I've also enjoyed doing some small livestock,” she said.

Hoppe also does still lifes.

“I'll set up a still life challenge for myself – say with a lot of reflection or glass – once a week. It's a wonderful stretch.”

She has appeared in many exhibits and festivals, and her work is represented in numerous collections.
