MERIANS PITCHES SAINTS PAST CFCC, 7-4

Gainesville, FL – Gary Merians (2-3, 2.78 ERA) came up big for the Santa Fe Saints (14-12, 5-5 MFC) on Monday afternoon, pitching eight innings to earn the Saints third straight MFC win.  He gave up four runs, two of them earned and struck out four Patriots batters.

“Gary was outstanding today and we backed him up with some great defense,” said Coach Johnny Wiggs.  “He really pounded the strike zone, changed speeds and located his fastball.”

The Saints were hitless through the first three innings before breaking through for three runs in the fourth.  Austin Lawrence walked to start the inning and Joe Clouse followed him with a single.  Lawrence scored when the Patriots center fielder over threw the third baseman and the ball went into the CFCC dugout.

Two batters later with a runner on, Mike Miranda hit his ninth homerun of the season to give SF a 3-1 lead.

Santa Fe added two more in the fifth on a two out RBI triple by Moyer and an RBI double by Bozeman.

The final two Saints runs came in the sixth on a CFCC error.  With two runners on, Zach Floyd laid a bunt down the third base line and the Patriots pitcher's throw went over the first baseman's head and down the right field line, scoring two runs.

Merians started the ninth inning, aiming for his first complete game of the year, but came out of the game after a CFCC homerun cut the deficit to 7-4.  Daryl Barnes came into the game and shut the door, striking out three consecutive batters to earn his third save of the season.

Mike Miranda finished 2-for-4 with a homerun and two RBI, Brett Bozeman was 3-for-5 with an RBI and Jardian Thomas was 2-for-4.

The Saints host Lake Sumter CC on Friday at 3:00pm in a Mid-Florida Conference match-up.
