LAZAR THROWS ANOTHER NO HITTER, SAINTS SWEEP LSCC, 4-0 AND 5-3
Gainesville, FL – Freshman pitcher Colena Lazar (15-0) made Santa Fe College fastpitch history on Thursday afternoon, throwing her third no-hitter of the season in a 4-0 defeat of Lake Sumter CC, breaking the previous career record of two, held by Amy Johnson and Rachael Foster.
Lazar struck out nine in seven innings of work and didn't allow a hit for the second game in her last three starts. She has allowed only one hit in her last 21 innings pitched.
NJCAA #4/FCCAA #2 Santa Fe (26-4, 4-0 MFC) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Taylor Pangilinan. They added three insurance runs in fifth on a two RBI double by Lawna Hunter and an RBI single by Britany Doty.
The Saints had 12 hits in game one including a 3-for-4 performance by Alexis Sowell with two runs scored and two stolen bases. Lawna Hunter finished 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI, Doty was 2-for-3 and Ashley Curry 2-for-3.
Jasmine Warren earned the game two win on the mound for SF, pitching seven innings, allowing three runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts.
The difference in the game was a five run fifth inning by the Saints. Ashley Curry started the inning with a double and Warren followed with an infield single. Sowell drove the first run in on a single and Gia Tomossone (RBI) and Doty (two RBI) also drove runs in.
The Lakers made things interesting in the fifth, scoring two runs to cut the lead to 5-3, but Warren cut the comeback bid short, getting LSCC to ground out to end the game.
The Saints combined for nine hits in game two. Sowell was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, Jaimee Vega was 1-for-2 with a run, Doty was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI and Ashley Curry finished 2-for-3 with a double.
Santa Fe's next double header is at home on Saturday against the defending State Champion Florida State College-Jacksonville Stars. The first game is scheduled to begin at 2:30pm.
