SAINTS UPENDED BY ST. PETE COLLEGE, 8-1
Gainesville, FL – The St. Petersburg College Titans came to Gainesville on Wednesday afternoon and took care of business, outplaying the Santa Fe Saints (6-5) in an 8-1 victory.
The Titans started things off early, scoring three in the top of the first on three hits off of Saints starter Gary Merians (1-2). Merians pitched the first six innings, surrendering four runs on seven hits, with seven strikeouts.
“I thought Gary pitched real well today after the first inning,” said Coach Johnny Wiggs. “He settled in and was able to keep them off balance for the next five innings.”
Santa Fe's lone run came in the sixth on an RBI single by Jardian Thomas.
Down 4-1 going into the seventh, the wheels came off for SF. The Saints allowed two runs on a passed ball and a wild pitch by Jake Stridfeldt and Titans first baseman Nick Zaharion homered off of Steven Ragans to stretch the lead to 8-1.
The Saints failed to get another hit and fell to St. Pete for the second time this season.
“One of the main goals in baseball is to create the big inning and prevent the big inning,” said Coach Wiggs. “We failed to do either today.”
SF finished with seven total hits, including a 2-for-4 performance by leading hitter and FCCAA State Player of the Week Jeff Moyer. Jardian Thomas, Mike Miranda, Austin Lawrence and TJ Spina had one hit each.
Santa Fe will travel to Pasco Hernando CC on Friday for a game against the Conquistadors at 3:00pm. The next home game for SF is on Monday, February 22 when Pasco Hernando visits Gainesville for a game at 3:00pm.
