SAINTS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER WITH SOUTH FLORIDA CC, 10-9, 7-5
Gainesville, FL – South Florida pulled out a close game one victory, but the Santa Fe Saints (3-3) were able to even things up with a win in game two behind a 3-for-3 performance by catcher Cory Elasik.
Morgan McKinney started on the mound in game one and gave up six runs, but only one of them was earned. The Saints committed a season high eight errors in the one run loss.
South Florida jumped out to a 5-0 lead but the Saints answered with three in the third and six in the fourth on three hits to take the lead 9-6. The Panthers fought back and picked up one run in the fifth to trim the lead to 9-7 and retook the lead in the sixth on a three run homerun. Santa Fe was unable to score again and fell 10-9.
Steven Ragans pitched one third of inning in relief and Daryl Barnes (0-1) took the loss, giving up three runs, one earned, on two hits.
Mike Miranda led the Saints offensively in game one, going 2-for-4 with four RBI. Jeff Moyer was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI
In game two, Elasik and Miranda provided the pop for SF, combining to knock in five of the Saints seven runs.
The Panthers were able to get on the board first again, scoring two in the first, but SF answered with two of their own on RBI by Jardian Thomas and Austin Lawrence.
Down 4-2 in the third inning, Miranda stepped to the plate with a man on and evened the score with a homerun to left centerfield. An inning later Elasik left the yard to give Santa Fe their first lead of the game.
South Florida tied it up in the fifth, but Elasik struck again, this time tripling to center field in the sixth inning to knock in the winning runs for the Saints.
Elasik finished game two 3-for-3 with a HR, triple and three RBI, TJ Spina was 2-for-4 and Miranda was 1-for-4 with a two run HR, giving him three homeruns and 12 RBI on the season. Ory Pitts (1-0) earned the win for SF.
The Saints will travel to Hillsborough CC on Monday to face the Hawks at 3:00pm in Tampa. Santa Fe defeated HCC on opening day in Gainesville 5-2.
