SAINTS WIN TWO OF THREE AT JUCO TOURNAMENT

Clearwater, FL – Despite the less than ideal weather conditions, Coach Chris Ahern and the FCCAA #2/NJCAA #12 Santa Fe Saints (2-1) were able to win two of three games at the JUCO Kickoff Tournament on Saturday.

On the day, the team hit .337, belting out 39  hits in three games, including nine for extra bases.

Jaimee Vega (pictured top) led the team with five hits on the day, including a triple a double, three Runs scored and four RBI. Venica Brown (pictured bottom), who caught all three games, also had two RBI,  hitting .375 on the day with a double, four walks, two RBI and a Run scored.

Gia Tomossone went .333 on the day, with two doubles, four RBI and two Runs Scored.

Other extra base hits by the Saints included a triple Alexis Sowell with four runs scored and an RBI and Mandi Brown’s triple with two runs scored and .300 BA on the day.   Brittany Doty also chipped in a double, as she hit.333 on the day with two RBI’s and a Run scored.

Colena Lazar picked up the win in game one vs. Hillsborough CC, where she scattered four hits by the Hawks, but the defense committed five errors behind her.  The Saints compiled 11 hits, though, and won the game with a final score of 9-4.

Jasmine Warren earned the win in game two v. Gulf Coast CC, where both teams came to hit.  The Saints collected 12 hits and gave up nine to the Commodores.  The Saints opened the game with a run in the top of the first inning and Gulf Coast answered with two of their own.  The Saints would add three more in the second inning, two in the fourth, and one in the fifth.  The Commodores answered with two in the sixth and one in the seventh, but the Saints held on for a 7-5 victory.

In game three, Allie Short took the loss for the Saints, while she and Colesa Lazar combined on the mound to give up seven total hits in the game.  Again the Saints committed multiple errors behind the pitchers.  Both teams each only had 7 hits, but the Eagles were able to put theirs together at the right time and capitalize on Saints’ errors to put the game away, 8-3.

“Overall it was a good first day out,” said Head Coach Chris Ahern.  “We learned some things about ourselves, and the team, which is very young, hopefully now has the ‘first-day jitters’ behind them”.
