SAINTS DEFEAT WEBBER INTERNATIONAL JV IN CONVINCING FASHION, 88-53
Gainesville, FL – The Santa Fe Saints (13-7, 1-0 MFC) took early control on Monday night in a non-conference game against Webber International JV, storming out to a 28-9 lead in route to an 88-53 victory.
“This was a good win for our team,” said Coach Chris Mowry. “I thought we did a good job starting out both halves. We started out 25-8 in the first half and let them hit some threes to get back into it. We came out of the locker room and defended well and we were able to make some shots and get a big lead.”
Chris Clay paced the Saints in the early going, scoring eight points over a four minute span in the first half to give SF a 20 point cushion.
Webber cut the lead to 42-30 at halftime with a barrage of five three point shots in the final five minutes. The Warriors capped the half with a tip in buzzer beating lay-up.
The Saints opened the second half on a 22-1 run to stretch the lead to 64-31 and held Webber without a field goal until the 12 minute mark. The Warriors made only 7-of-25 shots in the second half and were only 18-of-50 for the game.
SF outrebounded Webber 49-34 and had a significant advantage on the offensive boards, pulling down 22 to only six for the Warriors.
“We had a pretty big size advantage tonight but I think we still worked hard underneath and rebounded well,” said Mowry.
Iran Hollis led five Saints in double figures, scoring 13 points to go with eight rebounds. Chad Renfro and Chuck Ford had 12 points each, Altavious Carter scored 11 and Branimir Mikulic had 10 points and six rebounds. Igor Premasunac led Santa Fe in rebounds with nine.
“I thought we played unselfishly and spread the ball around tonight,” said Mowry. “This was a good game for us leading into the Daytona State game on Saturday. We need to work hard this week and try to make sure we are ready. They are having a really good year and they have a lot of talent on their roster.”
Daytona State College visits Gainesville on Saturday, January 23 for a Mid-Florida Conference game scheduled to tip-off at 4:00pm. The women’s team will start things off against Daytona at 2:00pm.
