TCC USES BIG SECOND HALF TO RUN PAST SAINTS, 93-71
Gainesville, FL – The Santa Fe Saints (7-6) controlled things in the first half, building an 11 point lead at one point, but were outmatched in the second half, getting outscored by FCCAA #4 Tallahassee CC 50-28 over the final 20 minutes.
"Our guys played hard tonight," said Coach Chris Mowry. "We did some good things on offense and defense, we just ran up against a fantastic performance by TCC. They shot the ball extremely well and a lot of those shots were contested. I don't know that there's a junior college team in the country that could have beat them tonight."
The Eagles of TCC missed only five shots in the second half, going 19-for-24, including 7-for-10 from the three point line. Tallahassee finished the game shooting 66% from the field and made 13 three points shot on 19 attempts.
The Saints started the game strong, building a ten point lead midway through the first half. Santa Fe took their largest lead at 11 points, 40-29 with 6:51 remaining.
TCC closed the gap over the last four minutes of the half and hit a layup at the buzzer to tie the score 43-43 going into the break.
The Eagles started the second half on a 14-3 run and never looked back, building their lead to a game high 26 with two minutes to go in route to their seventh win in a row.
"The result tonight was not what we wanted, but if we continue to play hard for 40 minutes, every game, the results will start to show in the win and loss column," Mowry said.
Chris Baez led the Saints in scoring with 20 points, Marlon Rivera finished with 13 points and six assists, Chad Renfro had 11 points and five rebounds and Iran Hollis and Igor Premasunac each had 10 points.
"We had good contributions from a lot of different players tonight," said Mowry. "Marlon played very well overall, Chris [Baez] got us going early on and continued to score all game. Igor probably played his best all around game of the season and did it against one of the best big men in the country (Bernard James, Florida State University signee)."
SF will travel to Babson Park on Wednesday for a game against Webber International JV at 4:00pm.
