SFC MEN'S BASKETBALL

DEFENSE LEADS SAINTS TO WIN OVER POLK, 60-49

Winter Haven, FL – The FCCAA #7 Santa Fe Saints (6-2) bounced back from their loss to Brevard in a big way on Wednesday night, getting a win on the road against the always tough Polk State College Vikings (5-3). The Saints held Polk to 29% shooting from the field and only 12% (2-for-17) from the three point line in the strong defensive effort.

The game was close for the first ten minutes before SFC pulled out to a double digit lead behind strong play from Marlon Rivera (pictured). The Vikings hung in and trimmed the lead to eight going into the break, 30-22.

In the second half Santa Fe maintained their small lead and continued to play solid defense. Polk tried to get back into it in the closing minutes, but SFC knocked down their free throws to secure the non-conference win.

As a team, the Saints shot 49% (21-for-43) and made seven three point shots. Marlon Rivera led the way with 13 points, five rebounds and five assists. Chuck Ford finished with 12 points, Chad Renfro had 11, Altavious Carter 10 and Branimir Mikulic scored nine points and pulled down five rebounds.

"This was a really good win on the road against a very good Polk team," said Coach Chris Mowry. "I'm very pleased with the defensive effort and the intensity we showed tonight. Our guys will take the next couple days off and then we will get back to practice and prepare for TAAG Academy."

TAAG Academy comes to Gainesville on Monday, November 30 for a game at 7:00pm.
