An Evening of Jazz, Rhythm and Blues, and Rock 'n Roll
November 11, 2009
Slated for a 7 p.m. downbeat on Nov. 19 in E Auditorium, the Fine Arts department will present an Evening of Jazz, Rhythm and Blues, and Rock n' Roll, featuring the Santa Fe Big Band and Jazz Combo, and premiering the Rhythm and Blues Ensemble and "Impact" in a formal concert.
You'll hear the sounds of the group Chicago, using "25 or 6 to 4" and "Make Me Smile," with Nick Turner on vocals, directed by Chris Sharp.
The Rhythm 'n Blues Ensemble, directed by Steve Bingham, will feature Stevie Wonder's "Signed, Sealed, and Delivered" and Aretha Franklin's "Respect," with Yndia Grant on vocals along with first timers Marco Lemmon (singing Joe Cockers' "The Letter") and Brent Lamkin (combining with Marco for the Blues Brothers rendition of "Soul Man").
Jordan Miller will help Yndia sing back-up vocals with the Rhythm and Blues Ensemble and also will be featured in the Jazz Combo singing "All of Me" and "There will never be another you." The Jazz Combo will also perform Sonny Rollins' "Oleo" and Horace Silver's "NutVille."
The final ensemble to perform will be the Santa Fe Big Band, which again will feature Yndia Grant Singing "Well Allright" (Wyche Watts). Other selections will include: "Buddy Rich's arrangement of "Channel No. 1 Suite," Thad Jones' "Back Bone," and our own Chris Sharps' original ballad, "And Yet So Far."
Musicians United (Santa Fe's only music club) is sponsoring a bake sale to help defray the costs of running a music program. Donations will also be accepted. Admission is free!
