SAINTS MOVE TO 2-0 WITH WIN OVER COASTAL GEORGIA, 77-64
Gainesville, FL – Strong defense was the name of the game again for the Santa Fe Saints (2-0), as they held the high scoring College of Coastal Georgia Mariners (0-2) to 27 points in the first half and 64 overall. On Sunday, the Mariners scored 93 in a loss to St. John's River CC.
"I'm very happy with the win tonight," said SFC Coach Chris Mowry. "We played with great intensity for most of the game and played very hard on the defensive end. Holding them to 27 points in the first half was a great effort."
The Saints also used a balanced scoring attack to defeat CCG. Four players scored in double figures, led by former Gainesville High School standout Anthony Nwadigo who poured in 13 points in 18 minutes of action. Chris Baez finished with 12 points, Altavious Carter had 11, including three three-point shots and Branimir Mikulic had 10, going 2-for-2 from three point range.
"I thought on offense we shot the ball like I knew we were capable of," said Mowry. "Altavious bounced back and had a nice game knocking down his shots, Branimir did a nice job for the second straight game and Anthony played very well in his first collegiate game."
After a tightly contested start to the game, including five lead changes in the first nine minutes, the Saints closed the half on a 24-12 run to take a 40-27 lead into halftime.
Santa Fe came out of the break firing on all cylinders and built the lead to a game high 21 points on a three pointer by Mikulic to give the Saints a 65-44 lead with five minutes to go in the game. Coastal Georgia closed the game strong, scoring 20 points over the final five minutes, but SFC was too much as they held on for the 77-64 win.
"We played very unselfishly tonight," Mowry said. "I told the guys after the game that I was very proud of the way they played tonight and that if we continue to play this way and give this kind of effort we can be a very good team."
The Saints' next game is at home on Saturday against Indian River State College at 1:00pm.
