SFC BASEBALL
Gainesville, FL – The Santa Fe College Saints pitching staff threw two shut outs on Sunday afternoon and the SFC hitters supplied all of the runs they would need in two decisive victories over South Florida Community College, 10-0, and State College of Florida – Manatee, 8-0.
Gary Merians (pictured) pitched the first three innings against SF and didn't allow a base runner while striking out three. Ricky Claudio, Corey Turner and Kevin Welborn combined to throw the remaining four innings, surrendering only two hits and no walks.
Santa Fe pounded out 13 hits in the seven inning game. Jeff Moyer and Josh Whitlow were each 3-for-3, Brett Bozeman was 2-for-3 and Jardian Thomas and TJ Spina both had homeruns.
In game two of the double header, Ken Wise started on the hill for the Saints and combined with Morgan McKinney, Matt Clement, Jake Stridfeldt and Daryl Barnes on another two hitter.
The SFC offense came through again in game two, combining four State College of Florida walks with seven hits to score eight runs. Jardian Thomas finished the game 2-for-2 and Nolan Malone and Jay Taylor each drove in runs in the winning effort.
Santa Fe Head Coach Johnny Wiggs was happy with the effort that he received from his pitching staff, "I thought our pitchers did a great job today throwing strikes", said Wiggs. "We only walked two in 14 innings and anytime you do that you give yourself a very good chance to win."
The Saints' next game is at Valdosta State University on Thursday, October 1 at noon.
