Congressman Stearns to Visit SFC Aug. 11 to Tour New Construction Institute and Discuss Green Job Creation
August 10, 2009
Congressman Cliff Stearns will visit Santa Fe College's Northwest campus at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11 for a special recognition ceremony for his role in securing approximately $500,000 in federal appropriations for the Kika Silva Pla Planetarium. The funding was used to purchase the projectors that allowed the planetarium to open to the general public in September 2007.
"Santa Fe College appreciates Congressman Stearn's endless support of the students and the communities we serve," said President Jackson Sasser.
After unveiling a photo of Stearns in the Planetarium's lobby, at 10:15 a.m. the congressman, accompanied by Sasser, will tour Santa Fe's new Charles R. Perry Construction Institute, the college's first official LEED (green) building, opening for classes Aug. 24.
Stearns will learn about SFC's participation in Gainesville Regional Utilities' solar feed-in tariff, see the renewable energy features in the Perry Construction Institute, and tour the construction bay where SFC students will be building a home for a low-income family via a City of Gainesville grant. (The home will be moved to a city-owned lot upon completion.) SFC development staff will also discuss with Stearns the significance of green job creation.
The Perry Construction Institute is located off North Road across from the SFC Teaching Zoo and Gymnasium.
