Kika Silva Pla Planetarium Celebrates the Moon with Lunar Festival Aug. 1

In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission and the first walk on the moon, the Kika Silva Pla Planetarium at Santa Fe College is presenting its first Lunar Festival in partnership with the Alachua Astronomy Club.
The festival runs from 3 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1 — rain or shine — at the planetarium at the Northwest Campus, 3000 NW 83rd Street. Eveyrthing's free! Guests will have the opportunity to cool off in air conditioning as many of the activities are indoors. Tickets are handed out 15 minutes prior to each talk or show, on a first-come, first-served basis.
Schedule
- 3 p.m. – Solar telescopes set up until approximately 8 p.m.; children's activites begin and include arts n' crafts, Crater Station, Moon Jump. Bob O'Connell's talk, "The New Golden Age of Lunar Exploration" (a free children's talk) also starts at 3 p.m.
- 4 p.m. – "Zula Patrol: Under the Weather," free children's planetarium show
- 5 p.m. Howard Eskildson's Talk: "Selected Stories from the Apollo Landings" (free for all ages)
- 6 p.m. "Passport to the Universe," free planetarium show for all ages
- 7 p.m. Bill Helm's Talk: "History and Signifigance of the Apollo Lunar Landing Program" (free for all ages)
- 8 p.m. "Black Holes: The Other Side of Infinity," free planetarium show for all ages
- 9 – 11 p.m. Telescopes available for viewing the Moon, Saturn, Jupiter and others
In addition to the above activities, see a meteorite, a space art exhibit by local artist Tim Malles (who will also be painting during the festival), a lunar software demonstration by AstroHawk Corporation, and learn more about the Alachua Astronomy Club.
