Conducting Research and Surveys

Conducting Research at Santa Fe College

Research involving students, faculty, or staff at Santa Fe College requires prior authorization.

At Santa Fe College, approval of research applications is a two-step process: Santa Fe College's Institutional Review Board (IRB) reviews research applications involving human subjects. Once research applications are reviewed, the application must then be approved by Santa Fe College's IRB.

Researchers should allow for 6–8 weeks for application reviews. Data collection may not begin until the researcher receives notification that his or her application has been approved by Santa Fe College's IRB.

Institutional Review Board Procedures

Institutional Review Board (IRB) Request Submissions:

If you are submitting a request for IRB approval, please be sure that all applicable documentation indicated in the following checklist are ready for submission before continuing to the IRB Request Submission portal below. Once you have gathered the documents in the checklist, please continue to the upload submission page.

  • Complete IRB Protocol Form here with all signatures.
  • A copy of the Grant Proposal if funding is involved (optional)
  • Informed Consent.*
  • Parental Consent (if subjects are under 18 years old).
  • A copy of any approved protocol for your research from another institution's IRB (if applicable).
  • Any applicable Data Collection Instruments. (Surveys, questionnaires, interview guidelines, and recruitment materials). These must be uploaded as a single document.

*Informed consent is required unless the research data source is from an already existing data source. Any research where an individual(s) or groups are interacted with in any manner requires an informed consent form or an affirmative acknowledgement from the research subject before beginning research. This process needs to be explained in the IRB Protocol form.

*Santa Fe College policy does not recognize student email addresses as directory information and thus require student authorization to be released. IRB approval does not negate college policy on obtaining student email addresses. If the intent in a protocol is to use student email addresses, that request must be made through the Office of the Registrar.
