Program Overview

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program prepares students for a career caring for the sick or injured in emergency medical situations. As an EMT, you will provide on-scene life support, working with other emergency personnel (paramedics, firefighters and law enforcement officers) to stabilize and transport patients to hospitals.

The program at Santa Fe College is a limited-access, one-semester credit/certificate program, offered during the fall, spring and summer semesters. This program consists of 320 hours of classroom, lab, hospital emergency department clinical, and ambulance rescue clinical components.

Accreditation

The Santa Fe College EMS Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Profession (CoAEMSP).

Licensure and Certification

Upon completion of this program, students can earn professional certifications and occupational licenses, including those concerning out-of-state reciprocity.

EMS Programs are limited-access programs. A selection process is used to identify applicants who meet minimum requirements. If there are more applicants than available seats, preference selection will be used. For this reason deadlines and attention to detail are important. Applicant Selection is based on many factors such as the following:

  • Completion of EMS1059 First Responder or equivalent with a grade of “C” or higher
  • American Heart Association CPR-BLS certification
  • Education
  • Agency Employment/Sponsorship
  • Prior Relevant Coursework
  • Exams Scores (PERT, Accuplacer, ACT, SAT)
  • Drug Screening
  • Background Investigation
  • Prior Military Experience
  • Prior Relevant Work

Florida Open Door Grant

This grant pays 100% of the tuition, fees, books, supplies, and assessment costs for this program. Students may qualify for a stipend of up to $1,500 for living expenses while completing their program, as funds are available. For More Information visit the Grants Page.

The EMS Program's goal is to prepare competent entry-level Emergency Medical Technicians in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains. Within 14 days of successful completion of all components of the EMT program, the student will be issued a Certificate of Completion.

Program Length, Format and Curriculum

The Emergency Medical Technician Program at Santa Fe College is a limited-access, one-semester credit/certificate program, offered during the Fall, Spring and Summer terms. An EMT is a professional who delivers basic life support care. This program consists of 320 hours of classroom, lab, hospital emergency department clinical, and ambulance rescue clinical components.

This course meets the requirements of the current US DOT National Standard Curriculum for EMT. The course presents the fundamentals of emergency medical care and for performing basic life support procedures. Components include patient assessment, airway management, medical and trauma emergencies, childbirth, patient assisted medications, behavioral emergencies and intervention, hazardous material awareness, and a mandatory 4 hour section on HIV/AIDS (FS401.2701.5c) and 2 hours of adult and pediatric trauma scorecard methodologies (FS401.2701.5b).EMS-1119 EMT Basic (7 credit hours)
