Emergency Medical Services, A.S.

Program Overview

The Emergency Medical Services A.S. program prepares students for promotions and advancement within the EMS industry. Students who are a state of Florida certified as EMT and Paramedic, and graduated from a Florida accredited EMS Training Program, have already fulfilled the core requirements and can earn an A.S. degree in as little as one or two semesters. With an A.S. degree in Emergency Medical Services, it is possible move beyond providing care in the field and seek a position in management with a public safety agency or healthcare provider.

The Santa Fe College EMS Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Profession (CoAEMSP).

Licensure and Certification

Upon completion of this program, students can earn professional certifications and occupational licenses, including those concerning out-of-state reciprocity.

The Emergency Medical Services A.S. Degree is a limited-access degree program.Successful applicants for this limited access program will have completed the following prerequisite courses and also meet the following requirements:

  • Completion of the following prerequisite courses with a grade of "C" or higher
    • MAT1033 or MAT1034 required if completing MAC1105 College Algebra
      MAT1034 or MGF1100 required if completing MGF1106 Topics in Math
  • Completion of the following professional core with a grade of "C" or higher
    • EMS1119 EMT Basic
    • EMS1119L EMT Basic
    • EMS1411 Clinical/Hospital
    • EMS1421 EMT Basic Clinical
    • EMS2464 Clinical Experience 1
    • EMS2465 Clinical Experience 2
    • EMS2620 Phase 1 Paramedic
    • EMS2620L Phase 1 Paramedic Lab
    • EMS2621 Phase 2 Paramedic
    • EMS2621L Phase 2 Paramedic Lab
  • Completion of EMS1059 First Responder or equivalent with a grade of "C" or higher
  • American Heart Association CPR-BLS certification
  • Education level
  • Employment or sponsorship with a public safety agency
  • Prior relevant coursework
  • TABE/CPT/PERT exam scores
  • Drug screening results
  • Background investigation results
  • Prior military experience
  • Prior relevant employment

This program prepares students to provide pre-hospital emergency medical services. Knowledge, skills, and abilities developed in this program also prepare graduates for positions in EMS management or education.

Program Length, Format and Curriculum

This program is a planned sequence of instruction consisting of 74 credit hours.

  • 19 credit hours - General Education Courses
  • 12 credit hours - Emergency Medical Technician - These courses meet the requirements of the current US DOT National Standard Curriculum for EMT.
  • 42 credit hours - Paramedic -These courses meet the requirements of the most current US DOT National Standard Curriculum (NSC) for Paramedic. In addition to the NSC, courses include State of Florida specific information. Paramedic students will learn advanced life support patient care procedures, which builds upon the knowledge of EMT.
