Math Course Guide

Start Math Right

Starting in the math course that is right for you is an essential component for success!

We strongly recommend testing to help find the right math to start with. If you have a PERT score higher than 113 and/or a CLM score below 40 (or ALEKS score below 46), you will start at the college math elective level. If you choose not to test, you may choose to start at the college elective level, though testing first is a smart choice.

At the elective level, you have three choices: MGF1100, MAT1033, and MAT1032. You will need six hours of math credit after these options to meet your A.A. requirements.

Gen Ed Math

Once you have completed your college math elective course(s), or placed out of them, you are now ready for gen ed math. You need 6 hours (two classes) of gen ed math for an A.A. degree, and many transfer programs require specific courses. Check your degree audit to see which courses are required for you.

Which course is required for you?

STA2023 - Intro To Statistics, my only required math

Then you might choose to take MGF1106 as your second gen ed math, and take it first (because it has an intro to stats in it). You must take and pass MGF1106 and ENC1101 if you took MGF1100 as your elective course. If you have completed and enjoyed MAT1033, then you might want to take MAC1105 and then STA2023

STA 2023 - Intro To Statistics, is required and other math classes are also required

Then the other class required is likely an algebra class, and you want to take all your algebra classes right after each other. You can take STA2023 after you finish the other math, or if you are in a hurry, you can take STA2023 (if you have met the prerequisites) at the same time as an algebra class.

MAC1105 - College Algebra

Prerequisite(s): MAT1033, or MAT1034 with minimum grade of C

Take this immediately after completing MAT1033 (or MAT1034) since this is the next algebra class in sequence.

MAC2233 - Survey of Calculus

Prerequisite(s): MAC1105 with minimum grade of C

Take this immediately after taking MAC1105 since this class builds on your algebra skills

MAC1147 - Precalculus Algebra and Trigonometry

Prerequisite(s): MAC1105 with minimum grade of B

This is designed for students who have strong algebra skills, have taken trig before (perhaps in high school), and need to take Calculus 1 next term. If MAC1147 is required for you, then you have the choice of taking MAC1147 or both MAC1140 and MAC1114 instead

MAC1140 - Precalculus Algebra

Prerequisite(s): MAC1105 with minimum grade of C

You can take MAC1140 and MAC1114 in the same semester if you are in a hurry.

MAC1114 - Trigonometry

Prerequisite(s): MAC1105 with minimum grade of C

You can take MAC1140 and MAC1114 in the same semester if you are in a hurry.

MAC2311 - Calculus 1 with Analytic Geometry

Prerequisite(s): MAC1114 and MAC1140 or MAC1147 with minimum grade of C
