Fight the Flu Epidemic
January 30, 2018
January 30, 2018 – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is monitoring influenza throughout the United States. The CDC is currently reporting widespread flu virus in nearly every state in the nation including Florida.
The CDC recommends getting a flu shot this year. Anyone who already received a flu shot will have a degree of protection from this year's flu strains. Although getting a flu shot is ideal before flu activity begins in the community, the CDC says it is not too late to get vaccinated.
The CDC also recommends the following tips:
- Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
- If you do get flu-like symptoms, you should stay home for at least 24 hours after the fever breaks.
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
- Clean frequently touched objects and surfaces like doorknobs, keyboards and phones.
Santa Fe College encourages all students, faculty and staff to exercise caution and follow the tips above to help lessen the effects of the flu virus. SF's Human Resources department offers guidance to employees and supervisors on leave related issues because of the flu including alternate scheduling and flexibility with accrued leave time.
