Honor Flight Veteran service opportunity for students

April 14, 2014

Honor Flight Network is a non-profit organization created solely to honor America's veterans for all their sacrifices by transporting our heroes to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect at their memorials. Top priority is given to the senior veterans – World War II survivors, along with those other veterans who may be terminally ill.

The Santa Fe College Office of Civic Engagement and Service is interested in hearing from Fall 2014 students with a minimum 2.0 GPA who may be willing to serve as Guardian Escorts for an Honor Flight in and out of Orlando on Sunday, Nov. 2.

This 1-day mission will leave early in the morning and return late the same day. Each veteran honoree is accompanied by his or her own Guardian Escort who is responsible for attending to the veteran honoree's needs throughout the trip. Responsibilities include pushing a wheelchair for up to 5 miles, loading and unloading of wheelchairs and personal equipment, and accompanying veteran honoree to the restroom. Guardian Escorts must be in good health and willing to attend two pre-flight meetings (6 weeks and 2 weeks) in Ocala prior to the flight.

For more information and to express interest, contact Civic Engagement and Service Specialist Kimberly Buchholz at kimberly.buchholz@sfcollege.edu or (352) 381-3660.
