Gonzalez and the Saints Finish Sweep of Lake Sumter with 11-7 Win

The Santa Fe Saints finished off a three game sweep of Lake Sumter State College with an 11-7 win on Friday afternoon in Leesburg. The Saints scored 29 runs during the three game set and held the Lakehawks to 14. SF is now tied for first in the Mid-Florida Conference with St. John's River State College, Daytona State, and Seminole State College.
Lake Sumter struck first, scoring three runs in the second and another in the third to take a 4-0 lead. Santa Fe answered in the fourth to tie the score with four runs on five hits, including RBI from Chipper Andzel, Andrew Fears, and Roger Gonzalez.
The Lakehawks (14-9, 1-5 MFC) retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth, scoring two runs to jump back ahead 6-4. SF got one of those runs back in the top of the sixth to cut the margin to 6-5.
In the eighth inning, Santa Fe (14-9, 4-2 MFC) exploded for six runs on five hits. Five of the runs came with two outs, including a two run double by Jonathan Camp and a three run homerun by Roger Gonzalez, his first of the season.
Connor Rooney started on the hill and tossed five innings, allowing six runs on 11 hits with eight strikeouts. Jimmy Moore picked up the win with 1.1 innings of relief work and Derek Vail finished off the game allowing just one run over the final two innings.
The Saints will be back in action on Saturday, Mar. 15 at home against Daytona State College at 1 p.m.
