Gainesville, FL – The Santa Fe Saints started off the Mid-Florida Conference season on the right foot, defeating rivals Seminole State College 5-3 with a late inning rally. The win is the fourth in a row and ninth in their last eleven contests for the surging Saints.
Kevin Martin started on the hill for Santa Fe (11-7, 1-0 MFC) and took a no decision, tossing six innings, allowing three runs on four hits with five strikeouts. Derek Vail (1-0) entered the game in the seventh with a runner on first and no outs and promptly struck out the side. The eighth and ninth were no different as Vail ended the game putting out the final six batters in a row. He struck out four over three perfect innings. The two SF pitchers held SSC to a .129 batting average.
Santa Fe fell behind early on allowing two runs in the first and one in the second. Martin settled in from their and held Seminole scoreless over the next four innings.
The SF offense plated one in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Fears and another in the sixth on a George Ragsdale single to cut the deficit to 3-2.
In the eighth inning, Chipper Andzel led off with a game tying homerun, his first of the season.
An inning later, with the score knotted at 3-3, AJ Mazzurco played the hero, knocking in two runs with a RBI single to give the Saints a 5-3 lead, plenty of run support for an unhittable Vail.
Colby Lusignan finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored, George Ragsdale was 2-for-4 and Chipper Andzel was 1-for-4 with a homerun.
The Saints and Raiders (10-7-1, 0-1 MFC) will meet up again on Friday in Gainesville for a 3:00 PM Mid-Florida Conference match-up.
