How to Meet Foreign Language Requirements

Departmental courses in all areas, aside from EAP, fulfill requirements for the Associate inArts and Associate inScience degrees; they fulfill prerequisites for upper division transfer into many Bachelor’s degree majors and pre-professional programs; and they add to students' intellectual enrichment, personal confidence, and cultural awareness.

EAP courses, by contrast, prepare non-English speakers for success in college-level coursework. Of this curriculum, only EAP1840 (Advanced ESL Writing) provides credit toward an Associate’s degree.

Associate in Arts and Baccalaureate students may meet the foreign language requirements by:

  • Earning a grade of “C” or better at Santa Fe College in a foreign language course of at least level two (ASL1150, CHI1121, FRE1121, SPN1121).
  • Presenting an official transcript from an accredited college showing credit earned with a grade of “C” or better in a foreign language course at least equivalent to level two at Santa Fe College.
  • Presenting a high school transcript showing two credits earned in the same foreign language.
  • Submitting proof of a score sufficient to earn foreign language level two credit via CLEP, SAT II, AP, AICE, IB or other appropriate exam accepted for credit or placement at Santa Fe College.
  • Presenting an evaluated transcript indicating that a high school degree has been earned from an institution where the primary language of instruction is something other than English.
  • Presenting an evaluated transcript showing at least 12 college-level credits earned at an institution of higher education where the primary language of instruction is something other than English.

Please check with your academic advisor for additional information, or if you are unsure whether you already meet this requirement.
